History of Chrysler in Chatham

The Chrysler brand has a long and storied history in the beautiful community of Chatham. Some of our employees have been a part of that tradition and we are happy to continue the relationship between the community of Chatham and Chrysler today.

In the “post-war” era Bert Stacey Motors was actually located right in downtown Chatham on the corner of King and 3rd Streets. It was housed in a 3 story building and the cars were actually stored on 3 different levels and had to be maneuvered through the cement columns of the building to get out for a test drive.

In 1969 Frank Waekens and Nick Krochak purchased the franchise from Burt’s son. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter Mr. Krochak passed away, and the Chrysler Franchise became Waekens Chrysler, a name that was around for another 20 plus years.

In the early 1960’s the Crawford family operated one of the first four Toyota Dealerships in Canada which was also downtown, in what is now the Judy Lamarsh Government Offices. Crawfords went on to have the Renault Alliance Franchise, and then AMC Alliance. In 1982 they purchased our current property at 351 Richmond St. which had previously been a Dominion Grocery Store. When Chrysler purchased AMC, it soon became Crawford Jeep Eagle and then eventually Crawford Chrysler/Plymouth/Jeep/Eagle.

By the mid 70’s Waekens Chrysler had moved to Richmond St. as well where the current Van Kesteren Hyundai Dealership is located. Both Wakens Chrysler and Crawford Chrysler operated successfully for many years. In 1996 the Waekens sold the Franchise to Neil Wilson and Roger McRae, and it became Kent County Chrysler. Crawford changed ownership as well in 2005 and shortly thereafter the dealerships and merged and became Chatham Chrysler officially in 2006. Dave Tessier took over ownership in the years to follow and oversaw showroom and service expansion in 2011.

Finally in May of 2017, Vince Lally, owner of other local Dealerships, and his son Adam, completed the purchase of Chatham Chrysler. The Lally Family are committed to the Chrysler brand in Chatham-Kent, and are extremely proud to continue the great history of selling and servicing Chrysler vehicles.

In the Community

Chatham Chrysler has partnered with many fantastic local organizations and charities over the years. It is an extremely important part of what we do and who we are. Our “Hands Off” contest has helped raise thousands of dollars for Big Brothers and Big Sisters, JDRF, The St. Vincent De Paul, and TheDown Syndrome Association among others. Employees have volunteered their time and efforts over the years to support this event and many others so that we can make a difference outside of the Dealership. We love being a part of the community of Chatham-Kent!
